what is breathwork?

The term breathwork encompasses a multitude of techniques in which a type of conscious breath is used for a specific purpose. The most widespread and well-known breathwork is the Pranayama techniques that are rooted in the Yoga traditions.

Since the 70s, new age practices have emerged, such as:

  • Holotropic Breathwork© by Stan Grof- Used to promote healing through altered states of consciousness

  • Rebirthing© by Leonard Orr - originally focused on healing trauma, especially birth trauma via breathing (originally in hot water).

Both Stan Grof and Leonard Or are considered the grandfathers of Breathwork.

In recent years, a growing number of breathwork modalities of have emerged. Their roots stem either from pranayama, and/or these more recent techniques- Holotropic and Rebirthing. Among these we have Wim Hof, BBTR (Biodynamic Breathwork Trauma Release), Alchemy of Breath , Transformational Breathwork, Soma Breathwork among others.

In ins.prana the technique used is based on the Alchemy Breath (Alchemy of Breaht). This technique merges the music playlist concepts of Holotropic Breathwork with the Conscious Connected Breathwork or circular breath that comes from Rebirthing.

CONSCIOUS CONNECTED BREATHwork

 

This breathwork technique consist of breathing without pauses between inhalations and exhalations. The focus is placed on the inhalation. This breath is then combined with various elements that provide unforgettable journeys with the possibility to reach altered states of consciousness, a level of relaxation far superior to meditation and the space for emotional release and inner healing.

Benefits of the Connected Conscious Breath

The benefits of Connected Conscious Breathing:

  • Decreased stress and anxiety

  • Ability to reach profound states of relaxation and bliss

  • Increased resilience and capacity of self-regulate

  • Increased energy levels and sleep quality

  • Releasing of toxins and improvement of digestion

  • Liberation from the crippling effects of accumulated traumas in the body

  • Emotional release and deeper connection with your emotions

  • Sense of clarity regarding your own path and the blocks in your life

  • Reaching new levels in your meditative/spiritual practice

Warnings

Conscious Connected Breahtwork is a safe practice as long as it is used properly. The technique is not recommended in specific cases such as:

  • Glaucoma and detached retina

  • High blood pressure (not controlled by medication)

  • Cardiovascular conditions such as angina and previous history of heart attacks

  • Cerebral and abdominal aneurysms

  • Uncontrolled diabetes and thyroid problems

  • Severe depression, bi-polarity, schizophrenia and other psychiatric conditions especially without being followed by a medical professional

  • Recent surgeries

  • High-risk pregnancy

For asthmatics it is recommended to bring the inhaler to the sessions.

Despite these contraindications, there are still not enough studies so if you want to practice, I recommend that you speak with your primary care provider to assess the situation. I am available to speak with your doctor to clarify any doubts. Even if decided that is safe, in these cases an adjusted technique is provided.

​

This practice is very powerful and can lead to emotional and trauma releases. In order to avoid dangerous releases and poor integrations which can ultimately lead to retraumatization, I recommend that you do this technique with a certified and preferably trauma-informed facilitator. Breathwork works with delicate states of consciousness, which is why, like hypnotherapy, it requires appropriate and extensive training for at least a year.
